Fissure Sealant Dental Treatments

Fissures are grooves found on the biting surfaces of teeth, occurring in all teeth. However, they are more prominent on the biting surfaces of our back teeth (first and second molars). With deep, narrow fissures, food can become trapped within the fissure as it is difficult to brush and clean, making this area of the teeth more susceptible to developing cavities.

A fissure sealant is a plastic material applied to the deep grooves/fissures of the back teeth (molars). By applying fissure sealants on the biting surface of the teeth, it creates a protective, smooth barrier against plaque and other harmful substances. This eliminates the possibility of food getting trapped and hence reduces the risk of caries.

Fissure Sealants in Adelaide

At MVDC, we believe in prevention and minimal intervention. That’s why we recommend having sealants applied as soon as the adult back teeth come through. We usually apply sealants to the first and second permanent molars and to appropriate premolars if we feel your child is at risk of developing decay. First molars typically erupt around the age of 6, and second molars around the age of 12. These are your child’s ‘adult’ teeth, which they will keep for life. It is important to seal them as early as possible to protect the tooth and prevent decay.

The application of a fissure sealant is painless and non-invasive. The sealant material is tooth-coloured and will be invisible on the tooth. Sealants are an effective preventive measure against tooth decay; however, it is important to maintain a well-balanced diet, practice excellent oral hygiene, and make regular dental visits.

We look forward to helping you and your family maintain a healthy smile.

Fissure Sealants FAQ’s

The grooves or fissure in your teeth can be so fine and deep that the bristles of your toothbrush cannot reach the bottom of them.

The bottom of these grooves can accumulate small particles of food, this food then feeds the bacteria that live at the bottom of the grooves and cause cavities.

Fissure seals fill and seal the groove in our teeth so that food and bacteria cannot reach the bottom anymore.

Fissure seals protect your teeth from dental decay.

In the long-term fissure seals will protect you from needing fillings, and the cost of those fillings.

By avoiding dental fillings, the survival of your tooth is much greater than a tooth that has had previous cavities.
